ZIP Alternatives

In the second part of our series on free or cheap alternatives to common software, let's look at compression software. The standard is WinZIP but you can try these alternatives:

WinRAR: A very good alternative that costs a few bucks but can do more than WinZIP.

JZip: Based on 7-Zip, it does everything that WinZip and WinRAR can do and it's FREE!!!

AlZip: Another free package with advertisements.

I am currently using JZip and I am very happy with it.

In a new series on free or cheap alternatives to common software, here is a list of programs for PDF creation, manipulation and visualisation:

CutePDF: Great tool to create and manipulate PDF files. Does not support links in the document.
Foxit: Very compact viewer (free) and has a paid-for sibling for PDF manipulation.
PDF-XChange: Great viewer with 64bit support (free). Has several paid-for siblings for PDF manipulation.
PDF995: Has the potential to do everything that Abobe Acrobat can do for much cheaper.

I currently use CutePDF for my work and I want to try PDF995 to see if it answers my needs better.

CutePDF: Excellent outil pour créer et modifier les fichiers PDF sauf ne supporte pas les liens.
Foxit: Viewer gratuit ultra-léger et possède une version pour manipuler les fichiers.
PDF-XChange: Viewer gratuit ultra-léger (supporte Windows 64bit) et possède une version pour manipuler les fichiers.
PDF995: A le potentiel de fiare tout ce que Acrobat peut faire mais beaucoup moins cher.

Je travail présentement avec CutePDF pour mes fichiers et je vais essayer PDF995 pour voir s'il répond mieux à mes besoins.

Today, I am posting my first entry on free or cheap alternatives to many expensive software packages. This entry will be about PDF files. Here are a few alternatives to Abobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader.

• CutePDF: Great tool to create and manipulate PDF files. Does not support links in the document.

I use CutePDF to create my PDF files and have used the viewer versions of Foxit and PDF-XChange to wonderful results. I want to test PDF995 to see if I should use it for my creation and editing needs. More to come...

J'utilise présentement CutePDF pour créer mes PDF et les manipuler. J'ai installé sur quelques postes les viewers Foxit et PDF-XChange et leurs performance vs. Adobe Reader est vraiment spectaculaire. Je vais essayer PDF995 pour voir s'il me donne plus que CutePDF en matière de création et modification de mes PDF.
