Improving AutoCAD Performance / Améliorer la performance d'AutoCAD

A colleague of mine asked the question if using the WHIPTHREAD environment variable could help on multicore systems. According to the documentation, WHIPTHREAD has 4 possible values:

0 - Single thread performance for regen and redraw operations (default behavior for AutoCAD 2000 and earlier versions
1 - Multithreaded performance for regen operations
2 - Multithreaded perfromance for redraw operations
3 - Multithreaded perfromance for regen and redraw operations

I work with lots of GIS drawing now and sometimes these drawings contains millions of objects for using multiple processor cores can help. The default value is 1 by the way!

Je travail avec beaucoup de dessins de géomatique contenant parfois des millions d'objets donc utiliser plusieurs noyaux peut aider beaucoup. La valeur par défaut est 1 en passant!

20 Years of Programming and 15 Years of AutoCAD

I apologize for not posting more this summer. It's been a hectic time with vacations and health problems. So, for now let's look towards a good fall 2009.

This month, I am celebrating 20 years of computer programming and 15 years of AutoCAD use.

I have worked with the following programming languages:

• GW Basic
• TurboPascal 6.0
• Fortran 77
• AutoLISP
• Visual Basic 6 / VBA / VBScript / VB.NET
• Java
• C#
• Python

I don't use the first 3 anymore, but the rest still comes in handy. I want to convert the VBA / VB6 code that I have to .NET since Autodesk and Microsoft are stepping away from those languages in favor or newer stuff.

As for AutoCAD, I started with AutoCAD 9 on an amber-colored monochrome screen and have used all versions since except for AutoCAD 11. I never saw it in use so it must of been a quick to be replaced version.

Here's are 2 questions for all visitors:

• Which version of AutoCAD did you start with?
• Which programming languages do you use or have used?

Ce mois-ci, je célèbre mes 20 ans d'expérience en programmation et mes 15 d'utilisation d'AutoCAD. J'ai travaillé avec les languages ci-dessus mais je n'utilise plus les 3 premiers. J'aimerais convertir tout mon code en VB6 / VBQ vers du .NET puisque Autodesk et Microsoft diminues de plus en plus le support pour ces options.

Pour AutoCAD, j'ai commencé avec la version 9 sur un écran ambre monochrome. J'ai utilisé tous les version depuis sauf pour la version 11 que je n'ai jamais eu la chance de voir.

Blog Post #100 - Macro Problems

Well, we have reached the big 100! My thanks to all the readers of this blog. For #100, I wish to share a macro problem I have encountered in AutoCAD 2009.

From AutoCAD 2005 to 2008, I would create a palette macro to program a fixed Fillet radius value when selected. Here is it:
In AutoCAD 2009, that macro no longer works. I had to changed it for this:
To program the FILLETRAD value with the macro, I had to use the FILLETRAD variable before launching the FILLET command. Very strange indeed. Has anyone else had a problem such as this with macros? Let me know!


Nous sommes rendu au 100e article du blog. Merci à tous les lecteurs! Pour le 100e, j'aimerais partager un problème que j'ai découvert avec les macros dans AutoCAD 2009.

L'image 1 représente une macro que j'utilisais dans les versions 2005 à 2008 d'AutoCAD pour faire un raccord avec un rayon prédéterminé. Cette macro de fonctionne pas dans AutoCAD 2009. Il a fallu que je le change pour celle dans l'image 2. Il fallait programmer le rayon de raccord avec la variable FILLETRAD au préalable de la commande FILLET.

Est-ce que quelqu'un a eu ce problème aussi? Laissez-moi savoir!

Autodesk Subscription Fulfillments / Envois de souscription d'Autodesk

I spoke to Autodesk about this issue twice in the last few months and got 2 different answers. With the new system of electronic distribution for the 2010 products, Autodesk will:

1. Ship you a DVD only if you do not download a program within 45 days of First Customer Ship.
2. If you do download a program, you can order a DVD copy from the Subscription site.

Since I downloaded AutoCAD 2010, I do NOT qualify for an automatic DVD shipment. Two of our clients that have not even used the Subscription site received the DVD version of the AutoCAD Revit Arch 2010 Suite.


Je me suis informé auprès d'Autodesk à 2 reprises au cours des derniers mois et j'ai eu 2 réponses différentes. Avec le nouveau système de distribution électronique des produits 2010, Autodesk va:

1. Vous envoyez un DVD de votre produit à l'intérieur des 45 jours après le lancement du produit si vous ne le téléchargez PAS.
2. Si vous téléchargez le logiciel, vous pouvez commander une copie DVD sur le site de souscription.

Puisque j'ai téléchargé AutoCAD 2010, je n'ai pas recu de DVD. Deux de nos clients qui n'ont jamais utilisés le site de souscription ont reçu des copies DVD du AutoCAD Revit Architecture 2010 Suite.

AutoCAD 2010 Installation - Part 2

I did a network installation of AutoCAD 2010 and 3ds max Design 2010 last week and noted a few important points that I wanted to mention in Part 2:

• If you wish to use network licenses, make sure your server has enough storage space for all product deployments. Each deployment can go from 1GB to 5GB of space.
• Make sure your server has a 1Gb network connection and if possible your entire network as well. A lot of data will be transferred so speed is important for installing multiple stations simultaneously.
• Do NOT use a mission-critical server for network licenses. A low-priority one like a file server or print server is best.
• A DVD-ROM on the server is always a nice touch!
  

La semaine dernière, j'ai fait une installation réseau d'AutoCAD 2010 et 3ds max Design 2010 et j'ai noté quelques points importants que je voulais mentionner dans la 2e partie:

• Si vous voulez utiliser des licences réseaux, soyez certain que votre serveur possède assez de place pour héberger les déploiements. Chaque déploiement peut aller de 1Go à 5 Go.
• Assurez-vous que la connexion réseau du serveur est à 1Gb et si possible, votre réseau aussi. Beaucoup de data sera transféré pendant les installations surtout si plusieurs postes sont installés en même temps.
• N'utilisez PAS un serveur critique pour vos licences réseau. Un serveur de basse priorité comme un serveur de fichiers ou un serveur d'impression est préférable.
• Un lecteur DVD sur le serveur est toujours apprécié!

AutoCAD Revit Architecture Suite 2010 Installation

I went to see a client yesterday and installed a network version of the AutoCAD Revit Architecture 2010 Suite. The process was very similar to the 2009 version. For AutoCAD 2010, the process was virtually identical and took the same time (approx.). Revit Arch 2010 has a similar process but took much longer to complete. I was also shocked that both deployments now take up 6.5GB of space for the 64-bit versions. A BIG size increase!


Je suis allé chez un client hier pour installer la version réseau d'AutoCAD Revit Architecture 2010 Suite. Le processus est presque identique à celui pour 2009. Pour autoCAD 2010, c'était presque pareil et le temps aussi. Revit Arch 2010 est aussi semblable à 2009 mais prend beaucoup plus de temps. J'étais très surpris de voir que les 2 déploiements 64-bit prenaient 6.5 Go d'espace. Une GROSSE augmentation de taille!

Design Review 2010 - Potential Problems / Problèmes potentiels

I have been contacted by 2 clients since Thursday about problems with Design Review 2010: random crashes, inability to save annotations, performance problems. I have not seen any of this but it might lead to some problem with the software.

Depuis jeudi dernier, j'ai été contacté par 2 clients avec des problèmes spécifiques à Design Review 2010: crash au hasard, annotations non-sauvegardées, problèmes de performance. Je n'ai pas vu ces problèmes mais c'est possiblement un indicateur d'un bug avec le logiciel.

AutoCAD 2010 Installation - Part 1

I installed AutoCAD 2010 last night and was pleased with the experience. Seems a little faster to boot up. The installation process has been changed a lot.

I used the downloaded version since I have not received my DVD yet. It took about 5 minutes to decompress the files and then the installation started. As was the case with AutoCAD 2009, please install the .NET Framework beforehand (version 3.5 SP1), because the AutoCAD installer takes an eternity to install this component. You will save time in the long run.

Next time, new install options.


J'ai installé AutoCAD 2010 hier soir et j'ai aimé l'expérience. Ca me parait un peu plus rapide au démarrage. Le processus d'installation a changé beaucoup.

J'ai utilisé la version téléchargée puisque je n'ai pas encore reçu mon DVD. Le temps d'extraction était de 5 minutes et ensuie, l'installation s'est démarrée. Comme avec AutoCAD 2009, veuillez installer le Framework .NET de Microsoft au préalable (version 3.5 SP1) parce que l'engin d'installation prend une éternité à installer cette composante. Vous allez sauver du temps.

La prochaine fois, les nouvelles options d'installation.

Licensing changes to Raster Design 2010 / Changements aux licences de Raster Design 2010

I just saw this post on Paving the Way, a nice blog dedicated to land development and transportation. According to this technical solution on the Autodesk site, it seems that users of Raster Design 2010 must use the same licensing system as the AutoCAD-based product that is used: network or standalone. This will probably increase the total cost of ownership (TCO) for some clients.

D'après ce document technique sur le site d'Autodesk, il semble que les utilisateurs de Raster Design 2010 doivent utiliser le même système de licences que le produit AutoCAD: réseau ou autonome. Ceci va probablement augmenter les couts de procuration pour certains clients.

Office 2003 Support Ended April 14th, 2009

I was reading on a few blogs that official support for Office 2003 ended on April 14th, 2009. If it wasn't for the fact that to use the Spreadsheet Linking feature in AutoCAD 2008+, it REQUIRES Microsoft Office only (OpenOffice is NOT supported), this wouldn't be a big deal.

Je lisais sur des blogs que le support pour Office 2003 terminais le 14 avril 2009. Si ce n'était pas pour le fait que pour lier des chiffriers avec AutoCAD 2008+, qui REQUIERE Microsoft Office seulement (OpenOffice n'est PAS supporté), ceci serait moins grave.

AutoCAD vs Express Tools vs Bonus Tools

Yesterday, I got a call from a client who has migrated from AutoCAD 2005 to 2009 recently. I set up the network deployment and converted their custom menu file to a custom CUI file. I also told the owner that the R14 Bonus Tools that they were still using were outdated and that the Express Tools should be used. Well, an employee did not get the memo and installed the Bonus Tools thus messing up with AutoCAD 2009. I told them to uninstall the Bonus Tools and it seems to have worked.

Rule #2 of Migration: ALWAYS check to see if an integrated tool does the same or a better job that a custom command before migrating to a new release.


Hiere, j'ai recu un appel d'un client qui vient de passer d''AutoCAD 2005 à 2009. J'ai configuré la version réseau et j'ai converti leur ancien menu personnalisé pour un CUI personnalisé. J'ai aussi mentionné au propriétaire u'il ne fallait pas installer les Bonus Tools d'AutoCAD 14 parce que les Express Tools de 2009 en offrait plus. Un employé n'a pas recu le memo et a installé les Bonus Tools qui ont causé plusieurs problèmes avec 2009. J'ai recommandé de déinstaller les outils et ca semble fonctionner maintenant.

Règle #2 de la Migration: TOUJOURS valider si un outil intégré offre les mêmes ou plus d'options qu'un outil personnalisé avant de migrer à une nouvelle version.

UNDO command died / La commande UNDO est mort

I migrated a client from AutoCAD 2005 to AutoCAD 2009 last week. They have a bunch of old LSP files that are used to simplify their workflow. Unfortunately, the LSP files which date back to 1991 through 1997 are changing variables that AutoCAD 2009 does not like. For example, the LINE and MATCH PROPERTIES commands no longer worked. The variable DEMANDLOAD was set to 0 instead of 3. Another example, the UNDO command stopped working. This was fixed by typing UNDO and choosing the ALL option to reactivate it. Somehow, the OFF option had been set.

Rule #1 of migration: Don't assume that all existing macros will still work. Test everything beforehand!

Malheureusement, les fichiers LSP datent de 1991 à 1997 et changent des variables qu'AutoCAD 2009 n'aime pas. Par exemple, les commandes LINE et MATCH PROPERTIES ne fonctionnaient plus. La variable DEMANDLOAD était à 0 au lieu de 3. Aussi, la commande UNDO de fonctionnait plus. Il a fallu changer l'option du UNDO de OFF à ALL. Je ne sais pas comment le OFF s'est activé.

Improve AutoCAD 2009 performance / Améliorer la performance d'AutoCAD 2009

I have been working hard on developing an AutoCAD Add-On for the last few weeks. I will launch and close AutoCAD 2009 several times per hour. I noticed a huge performance increase when I turned off the "when Switching Workspaces" option. Type WSSETTINGS on the command and try it out yourself.


Depuis quelques semaines, je travail sur un Add-on pour AutoCAD. Je dois ouvrir et fermer AutoCAD 2009 plusieurs fois à l'heure pour faire des essais. J'ai trouvé qu'en désactivant l'option de sauvegarder les Espaces de Travail automatiquement, ma performance a augmenté. Essayez-le avec la commande _WSSETTINGS.

Search .LSP with ease / Examiner .LSP avec facilité

My thanks to Download Squad for posting about this great app. Super Finder XT is a MUCH better alternative to the crappy Search utility in Windows XP and MUCH MUCH better than the one in Vista. I found 774 .LSP files on my station that had a specific word inside (DEFUN). Windows can't even search the contents of a .LSP file without a registry hack. Check it out here!

Super Finder XT est BEAUCOUP mieux pour chercher des fichiers que l'utilitaire de requête de Windows XP et ÉNORMÉMENT mieux que celui de Windows Vista. Sur mon poste, j'ai trouvé 774 fichiers .LSP avec le mot DEFUN à l'intérieur. Windows ne peut pas examiner le contenu des fichiers .LSP sans une modif au registre. Essayez-le ici!

Reconfiguring your mouse wheel / Reconfigurer votre roulette de souris

I got a support call from a client using AutoCAD LT 2008 yesterday. He was unable to get the OSNAPS menu to appear when clicking on the mouse wheel. A simple solution was offered. Type MBUTTONPAN on the command line and change the value of 1 to 0. The mouse wheel will no longer be used for panning but for OSNAPS.

If you wish to change any mouse behavior, go to the CUI and have a look!


J'ai reçu un appel de support hier d'un client avec AutoCAD LT 2008. Il n'était pas capable de faire apparaitre le menu des OSNAPS sur la roulette de sa souris. Un solution simple a été offerte. Tapez MBUTTONPAN sur la ligne de commande et changez la valeur de 1 à 0. La roulette ne sera plus utilisée pour du PAN mais pour la OSNAPS.

Si vou svoulez changer le comportement de la souris, allez dans le CUI et regardez cequi ets possible!

Missing printers in AutoCAD / Imprimantes manquantes dans AutoCAD

I got a call from a client yesterday with a serious problem. The problem has a simple answer. In her AutoCAD 2009 sessions, she could not access any system printer. If this is the case, the answer typically is that the Hide System Printers option has been turned on. Uncheck the option from Tools > Options > Plot and Publish > Hide system printers to correct it. Here is a screenshot from AutoCAD 2005.


J'ai recu un appel d'une cliente hier avec un serieux problème. Le problème a une solution simple. Dans son AutoCAD 2009, elle ne pouvait pas voir les imprimantes de système. Typiquement, la raison est que l'option de caché les imprimantes de système est active. Décocher l'option en passant par Outils > Options > Tracer et publier > Masquer les imprimantes système. The demise of the tech bookstore / La fin de la brairie techno

I was shocked to see yesterday morning that my favorite techno bookstore, Camelot, has closed down as of last Saturday. I guess the proliferation of online bookstores killed their business. I will say that online stores have great prices, but you can't preview the books or leaf through them. I was quite saddened. They had a great selection of programming and Autodesk books for sale.


J'étais très surpris hier matin de voir que ma librairie techno préféré, Camelot, a fermé ses portes samedi dernier. J'imagine que la multitude de magasins virtuels a tué leur marché. Les magasins virtuels ont de très bons prix, mais tu ne peux pas feuilleté le livre avant de l'acheter. J'avais un pincement au coeur. Ils avaient une bonne sélection de livres sur la programmation et sur les produits d'Autodesk.

Excel 2007 bug / Bogue d'Excel 2007

I was cleaning up some papers during the holidays and found this gem. If you have Microsoft Excel 2007 and want to know if Service Pack 1 is installed, type the following formula in a cell:

=850*77.1

The answer should be 65536. If you get 100,000 as the answer, you do not have Service Pack 1. The problem lies in the translation of 16bit integers. This bug was fixed in SP1.


J'ai nettoyé des papiers lors des fêtes et j'ai trouvé un bijou. Si vous avez Microsoft Excel 2007 et vous voulez savoir si Service Pack 1 est installé, tapez la formule suivante dans une cellule:

=850*77.1

La réponse devrait être 65536. Si vous avez 100000 comme valeur, vous n'avez pas Service Pack 1. Le problème est lié à la traduction des valeurs entières 16bit. Ce bogue est corrigé dans SP1.

AutoCAD + Hospitals / AutoCAD + les hôpitaux

Last week, I had my tonsils removed and upon waking up, I began to examine all the equipment around me. I wondered how much of it was actually designed with AutoCAD. I know that Pro/E is common in the medical equipment field, but what about Autodesk solutions? The hospital itself, the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, was built in the 50s so perhaps on some renovations were done with AutoCAD. The new hospitals in Montreal are going to use Revit for all design work.

My thanks to Dr. Black, Dr. Villeneuve and the nursing staff for the top notch care I received during my stay.

La semaine dernière, j'ai eu une amygdalectomie et après mon réveil, j'ai commencé à examiner l'équipement autour de moi. Je me suis questionné sur la quantité qui a été concu avec AutoCAD. Je sais que Pro/E est très commun dans le domaine de l'équipement médicale, mais est-ce que les solutions d'Autodesk sont présentes aussi? L'hôpital Royal Victoria à Montréal a été construite dans les années 50 donc il y a possiblement eu des rénos faites avec AutoCAD. Les nouveaux hôpitaux de Montréal utiliseront Revit pour le coté conception.

J'aimerais remercier les Dres. Black et Villeneuve et l'équipe des infirmières pour l'excellent traitement que eu lors de mon séjour.

Missing dialog boxes in AutoCAD / boites de dialogues absentes dans AutoCAD

A common problem I have helped clients with over the years is the sudden disappearence of dialog boxes in AutoCAD. When the File>Open command is issued, the command line requests the name of the file to be opened. This typically happens when the variables CMDDIA and FILEDIA are not set to 1. If this happens to you, type the variables show above on the command line and verify what the current value is. If the value is not 1, change it to 1 and try your command again. This problem is typically caused by a macro (LISP or other) that does not reset the values correctly.

Un problème commun que j'ai aidé des clients avec au cours des années est la disparition des boites de dialogue dans AutoCAD. Lorsque la commande Fichier>Ouvrir est activé, la ligne de commande demande pour le nom du fichier à ouvrir. Ceci est causé lorsque les variables CMDDIA et FILEDIA ne sont pas égales à 1. Si ceci vous arrive, tapez le nom de chaque variable sur la ligne de commande et vérifiez la valeur courante. Si la valeur n'est pas égale à 1, changez-la et essayez votre commande encore. Ce problème est typiquement causé par une macro (LISP ou autre) qui ne remet pas les valeurs correctement.

PDF in AutoCAD / PDF dans AutoCAD

I have been asked recently by 3 clients to offer my views on creating PDF files from AutoCAD. Ben said that he is missing small pieces of data that are in the DWG that aren't in the PDF. Max asked how he can speed up the process of creating a 20 page PDF from different drawings. Steve asked about different PDF drivers.

In a nutshell, I recommend that to speed up the process and to possibly correct the missing data problem, use the PUBLISH tool in any Autodesk product to create a DWF archive. Open the DWF in Design Review and then print with a PDF driver. Adobe Acrobat is the most common but perhaps not the best and by far not the cheapest. I have been a fan of CutePDF for years. There is also PDF995, AcroPlot, BlueBeam, Primo and many others.

If you have had problems with a PDF, I would like to hear about your setup and compare which one works best.


Récemment, 3 clients mon posé des questions sur la création de PDF à partir de dessins DWG. Benoit m'a dit qu'il y a des PDF qui manquent des informations qui sont dans le DWG. Maxime voulait savoir comment créer des PDF de 20 pages plus rapidement. Steve voulait savoir plus sur les différents pilotes PDF.

En gros, je recommande d'utiliser la commande PUBLIER dans les produits d'Autodesk. Commencez par créer une archive DWF et ensuite avec Design Review, imprimez l'archive en PDF avec un pilote PDF. Riding the Rails

Hello!

I was in Quebec City this week for a conference and had to come home on short notice. I booked a train ride back to Montreal on VIA Rail. I was very surprised by the service and comfort. Compared to an airplane, there is much more room, it's cheaper, nice landscape to watch and quicker boarding times. Next time, I will maybe try a round trip. I am jealous of the luxury that Europeans enjoy with their massive train network.

J'étais à Québec cette semaine pour une conférence et j'ai du revenir à la maison plus tot. J'ai réservé un siège sur un train de VIA Rail. J'étais très surpris par le service et le comfort. En comparaison à un avion, il y a beaucoup plus de place, c'est moins cher, le paysage est fantastique et l'embarquement/débarquement est très rapide. La prochaine fois, je vais possiblement faire un voyage aller/retour. Je suis jaloux du luxe que les européens possèdent avec leur réseau massive de trains.

Layer Filters in AutoCAD 2009 / Les filtres de calques dans AutoCAD 2009

I was teaching a class on AutoCAD Architecture 2009 yesterday and used the FILTERS command to purge the layer filters from the drawing. The FILTERS command is an undocumented command that I found on Lynn Allen's blog. Previously, the largest amount of filters I had ever seen was 400+. This one has 38013!!! My thanks to Max for sending me this file. The performance of the drawing was terrible until the purge. Now, it is much faster to load and use.

If you have a drawing with more filters, send me a screenshot of the FILTERs dialog box and I will post it.


J'ai donné un cours sur AutoCAD Architecture 2009 hier et j'ai utilisé la commande FILTRES pour purger les filtres de calques du dessin. La commande FILTRES est une commande non-documenté que j'ai trouvé sur le blog de Lynn Allen. Mon record pour les filtres était 400+ mais ce dessin en avait 38013!!! J'aimerais remercier Maxime pour le fichier. La performance du dessin était atroce mais maintenant, ca va beaucoup mieux.

Star Trek - 2009-05-08

Quantum of Solace

My wife and I went to see Quantum of Solace on Saturday and it was a great movie. I really enjoyed the fact that this was a sequel to Casino Royale. It gives a greater depth to Bond. Worth seeing! My only disappointment was that the trailer for Star Trek was NOT shown before Quantum of Solace. It must be available only in the US. I will have to watch it online tonight.

Firewood / Bois de chauffage

I recently spent a weekend as a lumberjack, chopping wood and singing the LumberJack Song. What a time!!! Anyway, the topic of discussion came up concerning how much we chopped. The official definition of a cord of wood is: a cord is defined as a pile of wood 8' long x 4' high by 4' deep for a total of 128 cubic feet or 3.624556 cubic meters. A cord of wood can be divided into 3 piles with a 16" depth which is the standard length of a piece of firewood and also known as a kitchen cord. It was a fun and exhausting experience to chop wood.

AutoCAD LT + Express Tools

I got a call from a client asking if he could get the Express Tools for AutoCAD LT 2009. I has to tell him that these tools do not exist for LT pour only for AutoCAD and the vertical solutions. However, you can use the Layer Tools from the Express Tools in all versions since 2007. Go to the Format menu and click on Layer Tools.

Autodesk + SoftImage

On October 23rd, it was announced that Autodesk was buying the SoftImage division from Avid Technology. SoftImage produces the XSI range of animation/rendering software, a direct competitor to 3dsmax. Is this a good thing for the industry? Two years ago, Autodesk bought Maya, a then competitor. I personally use Blender for my rendering/animation projects outside of Autodesk-related stuff. This announcement won't affect me but it is sure to annoy a great many people. Le 23 octobre dernier, Autodesk a annoncé qu'il achetait la division SoftImage de la société Avid Technology. SoftImage produit la gamme de produits de rendu/animation XSI, un competiteur directe à 3dsmax. Est-ce une bonne chose pour l'industrie? Il y a 2 ans, Autodesk a acheté Maya, un ancien compétiteur. Personallement, j'utilise Blender pour mes projets de rendu/animation à l'extérieur des projets reliés aux produits d'Autodesk. Cette annonce m'affecte pas mais va déranger beaucoup de personnes. Problem with/avec Update 2 for AutoCAD LT 2009

I just learned that Update 2 for AutoCAD LT 2009 has been recalled and that you should uninstall it as soon as possible. There have been reports of crashes after its installation. Make sure you do have Update 1 installed instead.

Design Review 2009 Problem

I ran into a problem when installing AutoCAD 2009 on a computer with AutoCAD 2007 on it. Design Review 2009 won't install for some reason. After a couple of tries, I got the following error message:


It would seem that old versions of DWF Viewer are incompatible with Design Review 2009. I recommend to everyone to uninstall DWF Viewer before installing Design Review 2009.

Don't forget SP1 for Design Review 2009.

J'ai rencontré un problème lors de l'installation d'AutoCAD 2009 sur un ordinateur avec AutoCAD 2007. Pour une raison quelconque, Design Review 2009 ne s'installe pas. Après quelques essais, j'ai eu le message ci-dessus. Il semble que les vielles versions de DWF Viewer sont incompatible avec Design Review 2009. Je recommande fortement de désinstaller DWF Viewer avant de commencer l'installation de Design Review 2009.

AutoCAD 2008 64-bit Network

I ran into a problem with a client who needed to create a network deployment for AutoCAD 2008 64-bit. We created a deployment on a 32-bit Windows Server 2003 and thus, according to the following link, creates a 32-bit deployment even if the DVD has both versions. To create a 64-bit deployment, it must be created on a 64-bit Windows (XP, Vista, Server). The 2009 version asks you what flavor you require in your deployment.

J'ai rencontré un problème avec un client qui avait besoin d'un déploiement réseau pour AutoCAD 2008 64-bit. Nou savons créé un déploiement sur un Windows Server 2003 32-bit et, d'après le lien ci-dessus, un déploiement 32-bit est créé même si le DVD contient les 2 versions. Pour créer un déploiement 64-bit, il faut le créer sur un Windows 64-bit (XP, Vista, Server). La version 2009 nous demande la saveur voulue dans la déploiement.

Reset your AutoCAD / Faire un reset de votre AutoCAD

I encountered the same problem on 2 computers this week. The right-click menus in AutoCAD no longer worked for the current user account but did work for the Administrator account. To correct the problem (high probability), follow these steps BEFORE reinstalling AutoCAD:

1- Make sure that the option to show hidden folders is on. If the Application Data folder is not visible, you must do this first.

2- Back up the Documents and Settings folder for your AutoCAD version (the fra folder as shown). This folder will have an abbreviation for the AutoCAD language that is installed.
3- Erase the same folder from the computer.
4- Open Regedit and erase the folder shown below.

5- Erase the AutoCAD folder appropriate to your version (same number as in Documents and Settings).
6- Close Regedit and reboot your computer.
7- Launch AutoCAD and it will reset itself.


J'ai recontré le même problème sur 2 postes cette semaine. Le menu du bouton droit ne fonctionnait plus avec le compte Windows courant mais fonctionnait avec le compte Administrateur. AVANT de réinstaller AutoCAD, suivez les étapes ci-dessous pour faire un reset de votre AutoCAD:

1- Assurez-vous que l'option de Windows pour afficher les dossiers cachés est actif. Si le dossier Application Data n'est pas visible, vous devez le faire.

2- Faites une copie des dossiers retrouvés sous votre version d'AutoCAD.
3- Effacez le dossier fra si votre AutoCAD est en francais ou en s'il est en anglais.
4- Ouvrez Regedit et naviguez vers le dossier avec la même version que dans le dossier Documents and Settings.


5- Effacez le dossier en question.
6- Fermez Regedit et redémarrez votre ordinateur.
7- Démarrez AutoCAD et la configuration s'exécutera.

AutoCAD Revit Architecture Suite 2009.1

The new 2009.1 version of the AutoCAD Revit Architecture Suite contains AutoCAD 2009, Revit Architecture 2009.1 and AutoCAD Architecture 2009. It is a 4-DVD box with 32 and 64-bit versions of all programs (Revit 2009.1 has a true 64-bit version now).

Could this be the first step towards eliminating AutoCAD Architecture? Mechanical Desktop was no longer available for sale when it was bundled with Inventor for legacy data reasons. To be seen...

Open/Save/Close Hotfix for/pour Autodesk 2009

If you have installed Update 1 or not for your 2009 AutoCAD-based products, you should install the following patch. I would recommend that Update 1 be installed first since it fixes a lot of small bugs. Follow the link below to download the ZIP archive that is appropriate for your setup. Two files must be replaced: a file common to all 2009 products and another for each product you have installed. Instructions are included in the Readme file. The procedure is identical to the one I described in this post. If you have problems, please leave a comment to this blog post and I can help you out.

Si vous avez installé Update 1 ou non pour vos produits 2009 à base d'AutoCAD, vous devez installer le correctif suivant. Je recommande fortement qu'Update 1 soit installé au préalable puisqu'il corrige plusieurs petits bogues. Suivez le lien ci-dessus pour télécharger le fichier ZIP approprié pour votre environnement. Deux fichiers doivent être remplacés: un fichier commun à tous les produits 2009 et un autre pour chaque produit installé. Les instructions sont disponibles dans le fichier Readme. Windows Vista SP1 & Windows XP SP3

I installed SP1 on my Vista computer last week. It took between 2 and 3 hours to install on a good modern computer. It did not fix the bugs that I wanted fixed. The system seems more sluggish and each time I boot the machine, the network card is deactivated until I reboot. Overall, pure crap!

SP3 on my 6.5 year old XP machine took between 2 and 3 hours and no ill effects were detected. I would recommend to anyone that if you are going to reinstall XP, go straight to SP3 because it will save you from downloading a HUGE amount of patches that are bundled in SP3.

As a comparison, I installed and patched Xubuntu 8.04.1 in a virtual machine in 20minutes last week. Can anyone say code bloat!


J'ai installé SP1 sur mon poste avec Vista la semaine dernière. L'opération a pris entre 2 et 3 heures sur un bon poste moderne. Plusieurs bogues que j'ai trouvé non pas été corrigés. Le poste est plus lent et après chaque démarrage, je dois redémarrer le poste pour réactiver ma carte réseau. En gros, de la shnout!!!

SP3 pour XP a pris entre 2 et 3 heures sur mon viuex poste datant de 2002. Il y avait aucun problème avec la procédure ou le résultat. Je reocmmande fortement que tout le monde qui doit réinstaller XP passe immédiatement à SP3 pour éviter de télécharger des correctifs inutiles qui font déja parti de SP3.

En comparaison, j'ai install Xubuntu 8.04.1 et ses correctifs sur un poste virtuel en 20 minutes. Abérrant!

Here is a little tip to help identify problems between a drawing that is fine and another that's acting strangely in AutoCAD. Use the VARS2SCR command to export a .SCR file that contains all the variables in the problematic DWG. Do this also for a good DWG. You can load the contents of each file into Excel or OpenOffice Calc and compare which variables might be responsible for the problem.

Voici un petit truc pour trouver des problèmes entre un dessin AutoCAD qui fonctionne bien et un autre qui possède un problème. Ubuntu 8.04 vs Mandriva Spring 2008

Hello again!

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my friend's computer and it went smoothly and works great. This morning, to test a sick Windows XP x64, I installed Mandriva Spring 2008. What a nightmare that was! It is not as intuitive a Linux distro as Ubuntu and it did NOT add my Windows install to the boot menu like Ubuntu did.

I should have used Ubuntu right from the start. Always go with what you know...

J'ai récemment installé Ubuntu 8.04 sur l'ordi de mon ami et c'étais très facile et fonctionne très bien. Ce matin, j'ai installé Mandriva Spring 2008 sur un poste malade avec Windows XP x64. Un vrai chauchemar! C'est une distribution qui n'est pas aussi intuitive qu'Ubuntu et il n'a PAS ajouter mon Windows au menu de démarrage comme Ubuntu a fait.

J'aurais dû utiliser Ubuntu dès le départ. Utilisez toujours ce que vous connaissez...

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, if you have a 2009 product on subscription you can install a previous version (2006, 2007, 2008) on your system. To obtain the serial number and/or media, log in to the subscription site and fill in the form. It will take a few days for the request to be processed.

Autodesk 2009 Product Licenses / Licences pour les produits 2009 d'Autodesk

I spoke to Autodesk tech support on Monday and they confirmed a suspicion of mine concerning the new format for licenses files if you are a subscription customer. The 2009 product licenses include licenses for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 versions as well. If you are already running one of these versions, remove that section in the license file to avoid any conflicts in your licensing. I will post a screen shot soon to better explain this. J'ai parlé avec le support technique d'Autodesk lundi dernier et il a confirmé un doute que j'avais concernant le nouveau format des licences réseau pour les clients avec souscription. Les licences pour les produits 2009 permettent aussi l'utilisation des versions 2006, 2007 et 2008. Upgrading FLEXlm / Mise à jour de FLEXlm

I have spent this week upgrading a FLEXlm installation that serves network licenses of Autodesk products. If you have the 10.8 or 11.4 versions installed, you can upgrade them to FLEXlm 11.4.1 in 10 seconds.

From the 2009 DVD, locate the files LMGRD.EXE, LMUTIL.EXE, LMTOOLS.EXE and ADSKFLEX.EXE. Next, stop the FLEXlm service on the server and then copy and overwrite the old versions with the new ones (look in the C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager folder). Start the service back up and you are now ready for the 2009 product suite.

J'ai passé cette semaine à faire une mise à jour à un FLEXlm qui gère des licences réseau de produits Autodesk. Si vous avez les versions 10.8 ou 11.4 installées sur votre serveur, vous pouvez les mettre à jour à 11.4.1 en 10 secondes.

A partir du DVD 2009, localisez les fichiers LMGRD.EXE, LMUTIL.EXE, LMTOOLS.EXE and ADSKFLEX.EXE. Ensuite, arrêtez le service de FLEXlm sur le serveur et ensuite copiez les fichiers en écrasant les vieux avec les nouveaux (regardez dans le dossier C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager). Partez le service et vous êtes maintenant prêt pour la suite 2009.

Subscription Benefits / Bénéfices de souscription

I spoke to Autodesk yesterday to ask about the new previous version installations. They told me that if a 2009 client under subscription needs to install 2008 (for exemple), they can request the media from the subscription center and install it on their computer.

My remaining question is: which serial number should be used? If the client has AutoCAD 2007 and then upgraded to 2009, to install 2008 use the 2007 serial number (or group id if under subscription). If this is a new client, I don't know. I will contact Autodesk today and clarify with them.


J'ai parlé à Autodesk hier pour m'informer sur le nouveau programme pour installer des logiciels de versions précédentes. Ils m'ont dit que si un client 2009 avec souscription qui doit installer 2008 (par exemple), il peut faire une demande de média à partir du site de souscription et ensuite l'installer sur leur poste.

For all subscription customers of Autodesk products, use the serial number on your product boxes to register your software. Autodesk is modifying all serial numbers for some unknown reason. Your contract number will remain the same but the actual authorization must be done with the number on the box.

I don't know yet how network licenses will be affected. I will post the info when I have it.


Pour tous les clients avec des produits d'Autodesk avec un contrat de souscription, veuillez utiliser le numéro de série qui est imprimer sur votre boite et non votre numéro de contrat comme auparavant. Autodesk est en train de modifier tous les numéros de séries pour une raison inconnu. Votre numéro de contrat restera le même mais l'autorisation des produits doit être fait avec le nouveau numéro.

Last weekend, I found 2 hidden Star Trek references. The first was "weapons locker 1701D" in an episode of Battlestar Galactica (the new one). Ronald D. Moore, the creator of the new series was a writer on Star Trek The Next Generation with the Enterprise 1701-D. The next reference was a license plate that said "KAPLAH". Kaplah is the Klingon word for "Success". I found both references to be quite funny. :-)

WAN problems with DWG 2007 / Problèmes de WAN avec DWG 2007

DWG 2007 Format Found to Choke WAN

Ray Sirois, IT director for the New England–based engineering firm Wright-Pierce, is putting the brakes on his company's migration to AutoCAD 2008 "due to poor performance issues" related to the use of wide-area network (WAN) accelerators such as RiverbedTechnology Steelhead appliances. Wright-Pierce attributes the performance degradation to "AutoCAD's version 2008 Save command reorganizing or reordering much of the content within the DWG file."

"We suspected the problem actually existed to a lesser degree in version 2007," Sirois noted. "However, in our testing, we found the problem is much worse in version 2008." In addition to putting a strain on WAN transfer, the change can have a negative effect on IT backup operations. "Our Exagrid disk-to-disk backup system heavily leverages data de-duplication to enable months of backups to be stored on one disk array," Sirois said. "If all our DWG files look to be 80–90% new data each time they are touched, then that kills the effectiveness of the backup system."

Ironically, the modified DWG 2007 format was meant "to make it more compact and improve performance for AutoCAD users." Nevertheless, Autodesk acknowledges that "one of the side effects of the DWG format changes is that when users perform a complete save from within AutoCAD (as opposed to an incremental save), virtually every byte of the file gets changed — even if zero changes were made to the file itself" (see "Potential for reduced write performance for Riverbed WAN links when working with AutoCAD 2007 DWG files" at the online AutoCAD Services and Support page, published March 12, 2008).

The affected products include AutoCAD 2008 and 2007, AutoCAD Architecture 2008, Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007, and AutoCAD Civil 3D 2008 and 2007. While it tries to come up with a permanent fix, Autodesk proposes the following workarounds:

• Use a feature in AutoCAD called Incremental Save Percentage (ISP) and set it to 50.
• Use a version of the DWG format other than the AutoCAD 2007 DWG format.

Wright-Pierce is cautiously experimenting with the first approach. Sirois hopes rumors of increased potential for file corruption with higher ISP settings will prove unfounded. For his firm, "saving the file in an earlier version's format is certainly not a workaround at all for Civil 3D and may not be for other verticals such as AutoCAD Architecture," he observed. "The newer model objects and entity types created in Civil 3D are simply not supported in earlier versions. Such objects can't exist in earlier-version DWG files without losing all their intelligence."

Sirois is encouraged by Autodesk and Riverbed's reaction. "The big news is, Autodesk has become enlightened about how important multioffice interoperability is to its mid-size and large customers," he noted.

Silver Peak, Riverbed's competitor, jumped at the opportunity to declare, "There has been uproar recently among AutoCAD customers because certain older WAN optimization products appear incompatible with newer AutoCAD file formats. Silver Peak has worked with Autodesk and other customers to verify that Silver Peak's NX appliances do not suffer this limitation."

United Airlines

I flew to Dallas with United Airlines from Montreal via Chicago last Monday and suffered a 3 hour delay in Chicago for 2 mechanical problems with the plane. I missed meeting Mario Andretti in the process. On Thursday, I was supposed to fly back to Chicago @ 5:55PM but the flight was delayed for unknown reasons. Since I would have missed by connection in Chicago, they sent me to American Airlines for a new flight. American had a conflict with Air Canada so back to United I went.

United found me a new flight but I would have to stay in Dallas one more night. They paid for the room but included no meal vouchers. I called United to complain about this and argued with a customer relations agent for 10 minutes about the spelling of my name.

Suffice to say, I got home with American Airlines 16 hours late. I hate United and will never fly with them again. Nobody's perfect, but they don't seem to understand customer satisfaction.

One more thing, they fill up a plane from front to back. Ridiculous!!! Air Canada has the good sense to fill up a plane from back to front so people don't bump into each other. Also, Dallas/fort-Worth Intl Airport is SOOOOOO badly designed it's not funny!

J'ai voyagé avec United Airlines pour me rendre à Dallas de Montréal via Chicago et j'ai eu un délai de 3 heures à Chicago pour 2 problèmes mécanique. J'ai manqué la chance de rencontrer Mario Andretti. Jeudi, mon vol de retour à 17h55 a été retardé pour des raisons inconnues. Puisque j'allais manqué ma connexion à Chicago, ils m'ont envoyé à American Airlines. Après qu'un problème avec Air Canada, j'étais de retour chez United.

United m'a donner des nouveaux vols mais je devais rester une nuit de plus à Dallas. Ils ont payé pour la chambre mais pas pour les repas. J'ai contacté le support à la clientèle pour poser une plainte et je me suis battu avec le représentant pour 10 minutes pour bien épeller mon nom.

En bout de compte, je suis arrivé chez moi 16 heures en retard. Je déteste United et je ne prendrai pu jamais de vols avec eux. Personne n'est parfait mais ils ne comprennent pas la satisfaction du client.

Une dernière chose, ils remplissent les avions du devant vers l'arrière. Ridicule!!! Air Canada comprend qu'un avion doit être rempli de l'arrière vers l'avant pour éviter que les passagers d'enfargent. Aussi, l'aéroport de Dallas/Fort-Worth est tellement mal concu, ce n'est pas comique!

Back from Dallas / De retour de Dallas

I was in Dallas, TX last week for the annual AutodeskTech Camp where all resellers (except ImaginIT) were present to be trained on the new products. ImaginIT, according to rumor, boycotted the whole thing because of the ridiculous costs associated with sending hundreds of people there for a week.

I really enjoyed the Revit Structure 2009 class as well as the BIM for Sustainable Design and Giving Great Presentations seminars. The flights I was on with United Airlines sucked (view next blog entry for details). I am glad to be home after a long week.

J'étais à Dallas au Texas la semaine dernière pour le Autodesk Tech Camp annuel où tous les revendeurs (sauf ImaginIT) étaient présent pour être formé sur les nouveaux produits. La rumeur qui courrait était qu'ImaginIT faisait un boycott pour protester les couts nécessaires pour envoyer des centaines de personnes là pour une semaine.

J'ai vraiment aimé le cours sur Revit Structure 2009 ainsi que les séminaires sur le Développement durable avec Revit et Donner des présentations fantastiques. Mes vols aériens avec United Airlines étaient pourris (voir le prochain article du blog pour les détails). Je suis content d'être de retour chez moi.

AutoCAD 2009

I installed my copy of AutoCAD 2009 on Saturday and it's looks nice. A brand new interface a la Office 2007 (which I kinda like). You can always go back to AutoCAD Classic mode if need be. My only problem was that I can't register the product because Autodesk's system has not been updated yet. I will you know when it is.

ZIP Alternatives

In the second part of our series on free or cheap alternatives to common software, let's look at compression software. The standard is WinZIP but you can try these alternatives:

WinRAR: A very good alternative that costs a few bucks but can do more than WinZIP.

JZip: Based on 7-Zip, it does everything that WinZip and WinRAR can do and it's FREE!!!

AlZip: Another free package with advertisements.

I am currently using JZip and I am very happy with it.

Today, I am posting my first entry on free or cheap alternatives to many expensive software packages. This entry will be about PDF files. Here are a few alternatives to Abobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader.

J'utilise présentement CutePDF pour créer mes PDF et les manipuler. J'ai installé sur quelques postes les viewers Foxit et PDF-XChange et leurs performance vs. Adobe Reader est vraiment spectaculaire. Je vais essayer PDF995 pour voir s'il me donne plus que CutePDF en matière de création et modification de mes PDF.

Quicktime + Vista Part 2

I installed Quicktime on my new Acer laptop with Vista Business and Quicktime works great. My home computer must have some incompatibility with Quicktime. Anyway, I will install VLC Media Player which I have bene testing and it play all .MOV and .MP4 files very well on XP.

J'ai installé Quicktime sur mon nouveau portable Acer avec Windows Vista Business et Quicktime fonctionne très bien. Mon ordi à la maison doit avoir une incompatibilité avec Quicktime. Donc, après des essais fructueuses à lire des fichiers .MOV et .MP4 avec VLC Media Player sur XP, je vais l'installer sur mon poste.

On my home computer with Vista Business, I have had terrible trouble playing .MOV files. All web-embedded stuff works fine but saved content would always crash. I found a program call Zoom Player that solved my problem. However, it does not support .M4V ou .MP4 files. I will try VLC Media Player to see if it solves the puzzle.

What a game! I was rooting for the Patriots but was proud of how the Giants played. Eli Manning outdueled Tom Brady. The blunder that cost the Patriots...the field goal they should of attempted. In the CFL, field goals are a way of life and it might have won the game for the Pats. Congrats to the NY Giants!

Recently, I installed Ubuntu 7.10 and Linux Mint 4.0 to see what Linux looked like. Very interesting stuff! The installation process was easy and you can't complain about the price...FREE!!! I will post a tutorial soon detailing how to use both flavors with VMware.

25 years of AutoCAD / 25 ans d'AutoCAD

This month is AutoCAD's 25th birthday. It was released in December 1982. What were you doing in 1982? I was in the 2nd grade looking forward to Christmas vacation. I have been using AutoCAD for close to 14 years now and even though it's not perfect, I use it every day.

Logitech NoteBook Mouse / Souris

I saw the weirdest problem last week. A friend was complaining that when he booted a laptop at his office and started a new message in Outlook, text was magically being typed without any intervention on his part. Suffice to say that the problem was a defective Logitech Wireless mouse that was capturing the keystrokes from the receptionist's computer.

Problem installing 2008 product / Problème à installer produit 2008

Hi All!

I have a client that received an error while trying to install AutoCAD LT 2008. The error was related to MSXML 6.0 that is required by the product. The workaround I found was to cancel the autorun installer and use the MSI file on the CD to install the product. Worked like a charm and much faster than the SETUP.EXE installer that is loaded automatically.

J'ai un client qui a recu une erreur lors de l'installation d'AutoCAD LT 2008. L'erreur était relié à la composante MSXML 6.0 qui est requise par le produit. Le truc que j'ai trouvé est d'annuler la boite de dialogue qui s'ouvre automatiquement lors du démarrage du CD et d'utiliser le fichier MSI sur le CD pour installer le produit. Ca fonctionne à merveille et c'est plus vite que le SETUP.EXE qui est utilisé par défaut.

3 Months with Windows Vista / 3 Mois avec Windows Vista

Back from vacation. My new computer is now fully up and running and I like Windows Vista. The only glitch after 3 months is that Quicktime does not fucntion correctly. All my .MOV movie trailers crash or the video goes crazy. Hopefully Apple will fix it soon. Office 2007 has a radically different interface. Still coming to terms with it. Stay tuned for more info soon.

Dynamic Blocks / Blocs Dynamiques

My friend had a very interesting problem. If your right-click menus are turned off in AutoCAD 2006, 2007 or 2008, you won't be able to manipulate certain elements of dynamic blocks. Turning the feature back on fixes the problem. Go to Tools > Options > User Preferences to make the change.

Mon ami avait un problème intéressant. Si vos menus du bouton-droit sont désactivés dans AutoCAD 2006, 2007 ou 2008, vous ne pourrez pas modifier certains éléments des blocs dynamiques. Si les menus sont actifs, le problème disparait. Va voir Outils > Options > Préférences de l'utilisateur pour faire le changement.

AutoCAD 2008

I finally received my copy of AutoCAD 2008 this week. Autodesk have to improve their order tracking system. I will talk about some features over the next few months. The best new feature is annotative scaling of text, dimensions and hatches.

J'ai finalement recu ma copie d'AutoCAD 2008 cette semaine. Autodesk doivent améliorer leur system de gestion des commandes. Je vais discuter des nouveautés au cours des prochains mois. La nouveauté que j'adore déjà est le annotative scaling des textes, dimensions et hachures.

One month of Vista / Un mois de Vista

I have been running Windows Vista Business for a month now at home and overall, I like it. Lots of changes but many things have stayed the same. I will describe some features in future posts.

Depuis un mois, je travail avec Windows Vista Business chez moi et j'aime cette version. Il y a beaucoup de changements mais plusieurs fonctionalités sont encore pareilles. Je vais décrire certaines fonctions dans des posts futur.

AutoCAD 2007 + LT 2007 SP2

Hi! Just to mention that SP2 for AutoCAD 2007 and LT 2007 is available. You will need your installation disks to install it. This patch fixes many small bugs and enables Windows Vista compatibility. Any other version of AutoCAD will not run on Vista (as Autodesk says).

Salut! Juste pour mentionner que SP2 pour AutoCAD 2007 et LT 2007 est maintenant disponible. Vous allez avoir besoin de votre disc d'installation pour l'appliquer. Ce correctif corrige plusieurs petits irritants et ajoute de la compatibilté pour Windows Vista. Toute autre version d'AutoCAD n'est pas compatible avec Vista (d'après Autodesk).

Sorry for not posting for sooooo long but it's been a hectic spring. Anyway, the best new feature of the 2008 Autodesk product line is the Annotation Scaling feature. It allows the annotations in a drawing to adapt to changes in the drawing scale.

Je m'excuse pour mon absence durant les derniers mois mais le printemps a été très occupé. Dans la série de produits 2008 d'Autodesk, mon ajout préféré est le Annotation Scaling. Il permet la transformation automatique des annotations dans un dessin lorsqu'il y a un changement dans l'échelle du dessin.
